We call this student, Eeyore. You can decide why.
"Mrs. ABC... have I told you how much I hate reading Chapter books?"
"No, you haven't."
"Well, they make my nose hurt. In fact, just touching the pages makes my skin crawl!"
He gets A+ for word choice...
and A+ for effort as after this statement, I found him in a corner, lying on his stomach, fully engaged in the novel we are reading as a class.

Chinese?
A very Caucasian looking student in my class has been squinting all year. And I don't just mean a bit... he looks up and squints to see me... he always has his nose in a book... literally, because he most likely has trouble seeing the words. He sits at the very front, and I almost laugh every time he looks up and squints. I told him he should see an optometrist, I've emailed home, I wrote in his report card comment this term.
He comes to class the other day and says, "Mrs. ABC! I know why I squint!"
"Oh really! Are you getting glasses?"
"Oh no, I found out I'm part Chinese, and they have squinty eyes, so that's why I squint!"
Sometimes I wonder if the word GULLIBLE or DUMB is written across my face!

Shapes...
A 10 year old student approaches me holding an orange geometric shape. (psst. It was a square)
He says, "Mrs. ABC... umm.... this IS a square, right?"
I stared... and stared... finally, when I overcame my horror, I simply nodded.

Seriously??
A student approaches me with a white piece of paper full of sand.
"Look, Mrs. ABC!"
"Umm... Yes?"
"This is what I just got out of my head!"
Excuse me while I go puke.

Word Choice
In Language Arts, we do encourage good word choice. Using words that are more challenging and interesting to the reader and the writer. We often call them yummy words! Today, I walked into another classroom. I'm not so sure about this student's word choice!
"Mrs. ABC! Do you like my sexy new haircut?"

''The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.'' ~William Arthur Ward
In response to this: The mediocre student attends. The good student listens. The superior student participates. The great student inspires.
--- I won't break my class down for you. I'm still searching for the great... but I hope that I can be great.
